2023-W 1 oz American Silver Eagle Burnished Coin
The American Silver Eagle Series has a wide range of coins to meet the most different interests. Besides Bullion, Proof, and Reverse-Proof coins, Burnished Silver Eagles are part of the US Mint's regular strikes and offer collectors another chance to appreciate the American Eagles program.
Over the 37 years of successful mintage, the US Mint has distributed the production of Silver Eagles among three of its branches: the Philadelphia Mint, the San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint.
Burnished Silver Eagles are minted in West Point. They differ from the others for their unique satin look and the West Point mintmark, easily identified in the coin’s classic design.

The Design
The obverse is an enhanced version of Adolph A. Weinman’s 1917 Walking Liberty design. Liberty has been the nation’s feminine representation for more than a century. In this image, the American flag is draped over her shoulder, and it flutters as she walks toward the sun's rays. Lady Liberty also carries oak branches in her left arm, and she welcomes the newcomers in America with her stretched right arm.
The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the upper rim, the year of issuance is on the bottom, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” lies aside, above the “W” mintmark, that identifies the coin’s origin as a West Point mintage.
The updated reverse design is artist Emily Damstra’s new bald Eagle depiction, which portrays the bird more naturally as it flies clutching an oak branch.
The inscriptions imprinted on the outer rim read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER”.
The West Point mintmark is also present on this side, on the right, between the Eagle’s wing and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Burnished / Uncirculated Coins
To produce Burnished Silver Eagles, the US Mint takes the blanks to a process called “burnishing,” hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface, but in contrast to bullion Silver Eagles, they have a less reflective luster due to the matte finish.
