The Perth Mint released another strike of its Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle Series, which features a different portrayal of the Eagle, exclusively signed by John M. Mercanti, one of the most renowned engravers worldwide.

The wedge-tailed Eagle, Australia’s largest bird of prey, whose wingspan can reach over two meters.

In addition to pure gold coins, the series strikes a high relief strike with platinum gilding, weighing 5 Troy oz of 99.99% pure gold, in a proof finish. These coins, in particular, were purchased from the Perth Mint on day #1 of the official release and submitted to NGC appraisal.

The Design

The obverse displays an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, crafted by Ian Rank-Broadley, along with the coin's face value of "500 DOLLARS." 

On the reverse, a unique design by John M. Mercanti features the Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle, surrounded by the series' name at the top and the coin's specifications, including the year, weight, fineness, and metal content: "2023 oz 9999 GOLD."

An NGC PF-70 First Day of Issue Coin 

NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, operates independently of sovereign mints, evaluating and grading coins. Utilizing the Sheldon Scale, a grading system from 1 to 70, they meticulously assess coins based on their condition.

PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.

NGC considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
