The Design
On the reverse, Britannia is shown as a protector as she carries the Union Jack Shield and a trident against the fierce wind.
The almost invisible inscriptions that closely encircle her image are part of the new security measures and embellish the picture. They read: “Decus et Tutamen,” meaning “an ornament and a safeguard.”
The words inscribed on the outer rim read: “BRITANNIA,” “2023,” “½ oz,” “999.9,” and “FINE GOLD,” standing for the year of mintage, weight, fineness, and metal content.
The obverse honors the memorable Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-lasting monarch. Her effigy displays the right profile of an 89-year-old Queen wearing the glorious George IV State Diadem Crown.
Along the image, read “50 POUNDS” for the denomination, “ELIZABETH II,” and “D. G. REG. F. D” for “By the grace of God, Queen” in Latin.
Security Features
The 2021 edition of the Britannia Series added four extra security features to the collection.
The background image has texture motion, providing movement to the waves and to the trident, which turns into a padlock and lies aside as the coin's viewing angle changes. The repeated micro-texting “Decus et Tutamen” surrounds the central image. The Union Jack also got tincture lines to emphasize the national flag stripes.
An NGC MS-70 First Releases coin
NGC, or Numismatic Guaranty Company, is a renowned third-party grading service that appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.
For NGC, “First Releases” refer to coins purchased from the original mint within the first 30 days of their official release and taken to its appraisal.
MS or Mint State describes a coin with the same format as a business circulation one that remained uncirculated. 70 is the grade given to coins with no visible flaws.
