The Design

The obverse features James Earl Fraser’s depiction of a Native American Chief, showing a right-profile bust incorporating elements from several Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. 

The design includes the inscription “LIBERTY” near the forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F” for the artist’s initials.

The reverse showcases a prominent American Bison, covering most of the coin’s surface, which gives the coin its “Buffalo” nickname. 

This side also bears the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” denoting the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.

MS means Mint State, referring to coins fabricated with the same shape as a popular business coin that remained uncirculated. 70, the highest grade on the scale, is for a coin with no visible flaws.
