2023 NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue 1/2 oz American Eagle Gold Coin

The half-ounce American Gold Eagle features the distinctive settings of the series. It is a 22-karat gold coin with guaranteed legal tender status. The standard design displays Saint Gaudens’ Lady Liberty and Jennie Norris’ new Bald Eagle.

This particular coin is one of those purchased from the US Mint on the very first day of public availability and submitted to the NGC appreciation.

The Design

The obverse displays Lady Liberty walking forward, with the US Capitol on her feet, heading to the future. 

In the image, she carries a torch and an olive branch, meaning light and peace for the upcoming years. 

Forty-six stars, representing the number of states of that time, surround the image with “LIBERTY” on the upper rim and the year of issuance on the bottom. 

The new reverse celebrates the program's 35th anniversary.

It showcases the new Bald Eagle, designed by Jennie Norris, in a left-profile close-up with a hooked beak and deep gaze. 

The engraved information contains “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” lined up. 

On the bottom, read “25 DOLLARS” for the denomination and “½ OZ FINE GOLD,” standing for weight and metal content.
