The Design
The new Bald Eagle design radically changes the coin’s reverse. While the previous image would display a familiar scene, the new portrait shows the Eagle in a single left-profile close-up, with a hooked beak and a staring gaze. The 35th-anniversary reverse design is a creation of Jennie Norris. Besides the Eagle’s depiction, the image brings the following inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” on top, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” vertically lined up under the nation’s name, “5 DOLLARS” and “1/10 OZ FINE GOLD” on the bottom rim.
The obverse design is the one created by Saint Gaudens to stamp the twenty-dollar Double Eagle coin. Lady Liberty has a front-face portrait and walks forward with the sun's rays in the background. “LIBERTY” is the word arching over her with stars on the outer rim, representing the national states. Liberty carries a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing light and peace to the outcome. The year of mintage appears on her lower right, and the US Capitol Building on her lower left.

As a standard, Gold Eagle Coins contain 22k gold, added by small percentages of silver and copper to make a durable and resistant alloy. Because of that addition of metals, the 1/10 oz Gold Eagles are slightly heavier than other similar coins, such as the 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
