The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty is featured in the 2023 Gold Eagle's obverse side.

Originally made for the 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Gold Coin, Lady Liberty walks forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. The torch symbolizes enlightenment, the oak, peace, and the march ahead, evolution. 

The Capitol Building lies on the lower left, and the mintage year is on the lower right. Six-pointed stars encircle the image with the word “LIBERTY” on the upper rim.

The new Bald Eagle depiction celebrates the series' 35th anniversary. The Eagle now has a frontal close-up and a deep glance. 

Above the Eagle’s image, read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” “On the bottom rim, the inscriptions refer to the face value of 50 DOLLARS,” weight and metal content, “1 OZ. FINE GOLD.”
