The US Mint introduced Gold Eagle coins to the numismatic world in 1986 through the American Eagle Program to be the official gold bullion coins of the United States. 

Gold Eagles are made from 22k gold and crafted in various sizes and finishes. Their design represents America's fundamental values, always depicting Lady Liberty and the Bald Eagle.

Ron Harrigal served as the US Mint Director of Design and Engraving from 2015 to 2021. His technical knowledge led the US Mint to pioneer advancements in coin structural integrity. 

Harrigal's contributions include the development of modern edge lettering, now featured on Sacagawea and American Innovation Dollars, and establishing planchet specifications for various coin programs like the American Gold Buffalo and American Palladium Eagle coins. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in determining alloy compositions, dimensions, and die specifications for large-format coins. Harrigal also oversaw the design specifications for dies, enabling the creation of the first concave coins produced in the US, and headed the redesign of the American Silver and Gold Eagle coins in 2021.

The Design

The Capitol Building is on the lower left, the mintage year is on the lower right, and the word "LIBERTY" is at the upper rim.

The new Bald Eagle design is a commemorative update for the series' 35th anniversary. It features the Bald Eagle with a frontal close-up and a penetrating gaze. 

Inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "IN GOD WE TRUST" accompany the image with the coin’s face value of 50 DOLLARS, weight, and metal content as "1 OZ. FINE GOLD."
