The Design

The obverse has a portrait of Paul Kruger, an essential political and military personality for the country’s independence. Along with his effigy, the words engraved are the country’s name written in English and Afrikaans.

The reverse features the Springbok Antelope, a native animal that became a national symbol. The inscriptions are: “KRUGERRAND,” “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1”, and the year of issuance.

The Krugerrand Series

The Krugerrand Series debuted in 1967 with its Gold 1 oz 22k version as South Africa’s official bullion coin. For some time, the Gold Krugerrand was the unique gold coin available in the market for private investment, attracting investors who wanted to preserve their wealth during fiat currency devaluation through bullion. 

The following years brought fractional sizes and powerful competitors like the Canadian Maple Leaf, the Chinese Gold Panda, and the American Eagles. But the Krugerrands’ credibility was already solid.

Only on the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand, in 2017, did a Silver Coin find its space in the South African Mint’s inventory, remaining permanently after its massive success.

Unlike the Gold Krugerrand, though, the Silver Krugerrand coins do have a face value of 1 rand, as inscribed on the reverse side as R1.
