The Buffalos Series

Introduced in the bullion market in 2006, the US Mint released American Gold Buffalo Coins as a 24-karat alternative to the 22-karat American Gold Eagle coins. 

Produced only in the West Point branch of the US Mint, each coin contains 1 oz of fine .9999 pure gold in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, with 32mm of diameter (1.287 in) and a thickness of 2.95 mm (0.116 in) with reeded edges.

Gold Buffalos holds a denomination of USD 50. And the symbolism present in the design attracts collectors who value the history and the art imprinted on the coin’s surface.

The Design

The obverse features a revamped version of James Earle Fraser’s depiction of a Native American Chief from the Indian Head Nickel, issued in 1913. 

The image showcases a Native American Indian bust with traces from different tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The word engraved on the outer rim is “LIBERTY” in front of the Native’s forehead, followed by the year of mintage, and an “F,” corresponding to ”Fraser,” the artist’s initials, on the lower left.

The reverse design names the coin: a giant standing American Bison that resembles a Buffalo. Completing the image, the inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” arch over the buffalo. The second motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST” is beside the animal’s muzzle. “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD” is beneath the animal and stands for weight, metal content, fineness, and face value.

The MintCertified FIRST30 Sealed Tube

The tubes house twenty coins, chosen among those produced in the first 30 striking days of the 2023 Gold Buffalo Coins. After being properly certified at the West Point branch, the tubes are placed in a strapped box and immediately sealed with a plastic sleeve so the coins remain untouched during the packaging process until reaching their final destination.
