1 oz American Silver Eagle Coin Design
The obverse of the incredibly popular American Eagle silver coin portrays a modified version of Adolph A. Weinman original Walking Liberty design. This iconic depiction of Lady Liberty was first used in the circulating half dollar piece from 1916 to 1947. In the scene, Goddess Liberty is striding to the left, with her right hand stretched forward and the palm open. She also holds laurel branches on her left arm. The sun rises above the mountains in the background as the wind blows her gowns and the American flag around her shoulders. Arching the outer rim, on top, is the word “LIBERTY”. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed to the right, with the designer’s initials “AW” below.
For the first time since the inception of the American Eagle program, the United States Mint opted to introduce new reverse designs, both to the Silver Eagle coin and the Gold Eagle coin. AIP artist Emily Damstra was the designer for the new illustration for the silver coin. She depicted a bald eagle in mid flight, carrying a branch on its talons. It looks like the bird is about to land, probably to add a new piece to its nest. According to the artist, she wanted to depict a bald eagle in a very natural state. Behind the bird is the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and encircling the design are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR 1 OZ. FINE SILVER”
All 2022 American Silver Eagles in this sealed tube have been minted in the first 30 days of its launch. They make for a perfect opportunity to obtain silver in the purest mint condition possible. Each American Silver Eagle tube contains 20 coins.
The coins contain 1 troy ounce (31.103 grams) of .999 fine silver in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition. They have a diameter of 40.6 mm (1.598 in) and a thickness of 2.98 mm.
The 2022 American Silver Eagle has a new anti-counterfeiting measure. A reeded edge variation, which is, in essence, a small smooth part on the reeds.
The American Eagle Series
The United States Mint launched the American Eagle series in 1986 with a gold and silver coin. The silver coin minted in 1 troy ounce weight, whereas the gold program includes fractional troy ounce sizes as well. The coins quickly grew in popularity among precious metals investors and coin collectors during the 90s. In 1997, the United States Mint introduced the American Platinum Eagle coins, and in 2017, the American Palladium Eagle coins.
In 2021, for the first time, the United States Mint released a new reverse design for the gold and silver coins. 2022 is the second strike of this new design.
