The Design

The obverse showcases James Earl Fraser’s Native American Chief design, which consists of a right-profile bust that combines traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. 

It includes the word “LIBERTY” in front of the Native’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials.

A giant American Bison in an upstanding depiction occupies the reverse side, covering most of the surface, resembling a Buffalo. Hence, the coin’s moniker.

It features the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” referring to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.

Coin grading services like NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, depending on their condition.

MS means Mint State, referring to coins fabricated with the same shape as a popular business coin that remained uncirculated. 70, the highest grade on the scale, is for a coin with no visible flaws.

According to NGC, “First Day of Issue” corresponds to a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day of its official release and submitted to NGC appraisal.
