2021-W NGC MS-70 1 oz American Gold Eagle Type 2 Burnished Coin
The 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Program was celebrated in 2021 with a new reverse design to the US Gold Eagle Coins.
Instead of Miley Busiek’s family of Bald Eagles, US Gold Eagles now showcase Jennie Norris’ Bald Eagle close-up depiction.
These coins, in particular, are Burnished Gold Eagles issued at the West Point branch and carrying the “W” mint mark. Burnished coins receive a special treatment that polishes the blanks and removes unwanted oxides, giving them a matte appearance with enhanced design details.
At SD Bullion, you can acquire 2021-W 1 oz American Gold Eagle Type 2 Burnished Coins, graded by NGC as MS-70 coins.

The Design
The new reverse was designed by Jennie Norris, who gave the Eagle’s head a frontal close-up with starring eyes, highlighted by the relief applied to the design details.
It is accompanied by the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” followed by the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The coin's face value, weight, and metal content read “50 DOLLARS” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD.”
The obverse depicts Lady Liberty by Saint-Gaudens, initially designed to stamp the 1907 $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin.
Lady Liberty steps forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. The symbolism refers to the nation’s direction toward enlightenment and peace.
The word “LIBERTY,” the Capitol Building, the year of the coin’s issuance, and the “W” mint mark from the West Point complete the artistry.
Burnished Coins
A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.
An NGC MS-70 Coin
Third-party grading services like NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) use the Sheldon Grading Scale to evaluate and attribute grades to coins and other numismatic items.
MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. Since it has never been in circulation, the coin has no sign of wear, tear, or scratching, which grants it a 70 grade.
