2021-W PCGS SP-70 First Day of Issue 1 oz American Gold Eagle Type 2 Burnished Coin - Gold Foil Label
The US Mint is commemorating the significant 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Program in 2021 by introducing a new reverse design to the Gold Eagle Coins.
The comprehensive series of 22k Gold Eagles now bear this new imagery as a standard feature across their various size options and finishes.
Burnished Gold Eagles receive a special treatment that polishes the blanks and removes unwanted oxides, giving them a matte appearance with enhanced design details.
These coins, in particular, are Burnished Gold Eagles issued at the West Point branch and carrying the “W” mint mark. They were purchased from the US Mint on day #1 of public release, graded as perfect SP-70 samples, and sealed in PCGS exclusive Gold Foil Label.
At SD Bullion, you can acquire 2021-W 1 oz American Gold Eagle Type 2 Burnished Coins, graded by PCGS as SP-70 First Day of Issue coins and sealed with a Gold Foil Label.

The Design
Gold Eagles showcase the original obverse design, but the reverse side received an updated version of the Eagle to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the program.
The new reverse design is a creation of Jennie Norris, who gave the Eagle’s head a frontal close-up with staring eyes, highlighted by the relief applied to the design details.
The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches over the Eagle’s head, followed by the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
Encircling the outer rim, separated by three five-pointed stars, read “50 DOLLARS” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD”, standing for the coin's face value, weight, and metal content.
The obverse features a depiction of Lady Liberty from Saint-Gaudens, which was initially designed to stamp the 1907 $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin.
The word “LIBERTY” arches over Lady Liberty as she steps forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. The Capitol Building is on the lower left, and the year of the coin’s issuance is on the right. The symbolism refers to the nation’s direction toward enlightenment and peace.
The “W” mint mark from the West Point mint is on the right.
Burnished Coins
A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.
