2021 NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coin (Type 2) 

2021 marks the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle program. Celebrating this landmark, the US Mint revamped US Gold Eagles, giving them a new reverse design created by artist Jennie Norris.

These 1/4 oz Gold Eagles, in particular, were purchased from the US Mint on the very first day of their official release with the new reverse design. They were graded by NGC  as perfect MS-70 coins, and they are available for purchase at SD Bullion.

The Design

Jennie Norris’s new reverse design depicts the majestic Eagle in a close-up portrayal, highlighting its hooked beak and intense gaze. 

It features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST. " The face value, weight, and metal content read “10 DOLLARS” and “1/4 OZ FINE GOLD.”

The obverse showcases Saint-Gaudens’ original obverse design, which depicts Lady Liberty walking forward, the word “LIBERTY” inscribed above, and the Capitol Building to her lower left. 

Her forward march represents the nation’s pursuit of a bright and peaceful future. The mintage year is placed on the lower right.

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue coin 

NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company works independently from sovereign mints and appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

According to NGC, a “First Day of Issue” coin is a sample purchased from its original mint on day #1 of its official release and submitted to NGC appraisal.

MS or Mint State describes a coin with the same format as a business circulation one that remained uncirculated. 70 is the grade given to coins with no visible flaws.
