2021 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Proof Coin
The US Mint released the American Gold Buffalo coins in 2006, introducing the first US 24k gold coin to the numismatic market. Bullion and Proof versions were struck in the same year.
US Gold Buffalos carry a significant historical design honoring Native American heritage and the country’s rich wildlife. These coins exhibit lustrous surfaces highlighting engraved design elements, enhanced by a proof finish.
They contain 1 Troy oz of 99.99% pure gold, are legal tender, and have a USD 50 face value. In 2021, the US Mint delivered 16,969 Proof Gold Buffalos.

The Design
The reverse depicts the American Bison, whose left-side upstanding portrait resembles a Buffalo and names the coin. The image covers most of the reverse surface and contains inscriptions.
The engravings start with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on top. The other motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is near the animal’s muzzle. Beneath the image, “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD” refers to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
The obverse portrays a Native American Chief’s right profile bust. It is a reviewed version of James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head Nickel, issued in 1913.
This bust combines traces from three distinct Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” is incused in front of the Native’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, lie on the lower left.
