2020 NGC PF-70 First Day of Issue 5 oz Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle Incused High Relief Proof Gold Coin with Box and COA
Introducing the Wedge-Tailed Eagle Series from the Perth Mint.
The wedge-tailed Eagle is Australia’s largest bird of prey. It has a wingspan of over two meters and is easily identified by its long, distinctively shaped tail.
The series counts on reverse-incused designs signed by John M. Mercanti, one of the most talented engravers worldwide.
This coin is a large 5 oz piece made of 99.99% pure gold, in proof finish, struck in a limited mintage of 50 pieces. They were taken from the Perth Mint on the first day of the official release and submitted to NGC appraisal.
Today, SD Bullion offers 2020 5 oz Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle Proof Gold Coins housed in an original mint box with a Certificate of Authenticity. They are sealed and certified by NGC as PF-70 First Day of Issue coins.

The Design
The obverse, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, showcases Queen Elizabeth II's effigy and inscriptions that inform the coin’s face value of “500 DOLLARS.”
The reverse displays one of John M. Mercanti's exclusive designs for the Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle, encircled by the series’ name on top and the coin’s description of mintage, weight, fineness, and metal content, which reads: “2020 5 oz 9999 GOLD.”
Because of the incuse high relief effect, the imagery is deeply engraved, and the Eagle seems to be leaving the coin, as the design surpasses the coin’s edges. That makes the design elements more vivid.
An NGC PF-70 Coin
NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, operates independently of sovereign mints, evaluating and grading coins. Utilizing the Sheldon Scale, a grading system from 1 to 70, they meticulously assess coins based on their condition.
PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
NGC considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
