These 2020 Year of the Mouse half ounce gold coins are minted using .9999 fine gold by the Perth Mint. These coins are the first release of the Lunar Series III, after the massive success of the two previous Lunar Series.

The original purpose of the Perth Mint, founded in 1899 as a subsidiary of the British Royal Mint, was to provide the British Empire with gold from the immense mines in Western Australia. It was not until 1987 that the Australian government took control of the Perth Mint and established the official programs for the coins and other Perth Mint precious metals products that are now well-known worldwide.

The obverse of these gold coins features a profile image of her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. Around her image are the words “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA”, “50 DOLLARS”, & “1/2 oz 9999 Au”. The profile image is a more recent depiction of the queen than previous year’s mintages.

The reverse features a field mouse climbing up a wheat stalk and looking to the left with more wheat in the background. The Chinese symbol for “mouse” and the words “MOUSE 2020” are minted to the left of the mouse along with the Perth mintmark on the far left of the coin.
