The Design

The reverse design showcases the Black Bull, the symbol of Edward IV’s Coat of Arms, and the ascendence of the House of York in the 15th century to the throne. 

The Black Bull stands on its back paws behind a quartered shield in the image. This shield was Edward IV’s creation, featuring three lilies of France and three lions of England, as a claim to both referred thrones. 

The inscriptions encircling the image refer to the coin’s name, weight, metal content, fineness, and issuance. They read: “BLACK BULL OF CLARENCE,” “1 oz,” “FINE PLATINUM, “999.5,” and “2019.”

The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II’s fifth and last official portrait. It displays a mature 89-year-old monarch wearing the Royal Diadem crown. The message inscribed around Her Majesty’s effigy refers to the coin’s face value of “100 POUNDS,” “ELIZABETH II,” and “D.G.REG.F.D,” which means “By the grace of God, Queen,” in Latin.
