2018 NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin - Mike Castle Label

The American Eagle Program debuted in the bullion market in 1986 when the US Mint delivered the first two standard coins, the Silver and Gold Eagle.

The debuting Gold Eagle is a one-ounce gold coin, made of 22k gold, with a USD 50 face value, and the most iconic symbols of America’s coinage history designed on its sides.

These coins, in particular, are 1 oz Gold Eagles purchased from the US Mint on day #1 of their official release. NGC graded them as MS-70 coins and sealed them with its exclusive Mike Castle Label.

Mike Castle, former Governor of Delaware and member of the US House of Representatives, is directly responsible for some of the most essential US coin programs, such as the 50 State Quarters Program, the Sacagawea Dollar, the Presidential Dollar Series, the American Platinum Eagle, America the Beautiful Quarters® Program, and others.

SD Bullion offers 2018 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coins graded as MS-70 First Day of Issue coins and sealed in NGC Exclusive Mike Castle Signature Label.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as an MS-70 coin by NGC;
  • Sealed with a unique Mike Castle Signature Label;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Purchased from the US Mint on day #1 of their official release;
  • Contains 1 oz of actual gold content;
  • With anti-counterfeiting reeded edges;
  • Bears legal tender status and a USD 50 denomination;
  • The obverse features Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty;
  • The reverse stamps Miley Busiek’s Bald Eagles.

The Design

The obverse represents the nation's journey toward progress, peace, and enlightenment through Lady Liberty’s march forward with a torch and an olive branch.

The word "LIBERTY" inscribed above, the Capitol Building, and the year of the coin’s mintage complete the image.

The reverse features a female eagle protecting her hatchling beneath her wing while the male eagle watches over their nest.

It also bears the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with the coin’s weight, metal content, and face value, which reads “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS.”

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue coin

NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company works independently from sovereign mints and appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

MS or Mint State describes a coin with the same format as a business circulation one that remained uncirculated. 70 is the grade given to coins with no visible flaws.

For NGC, a First Day of Issue coin corresponds to a coin purchased from its original mint on the very first day of its official release and taken to NGC’s appraisal.
