Featuring the design borrowed from Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 Double Eagle Coin, the United States Mint will introduce the 2018 American Gold Eagle BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) Coin. These coins are the 33rd release under this prestigious coin program – making it one of the longest-running coin programs in the world.
The first American Gold Eagle, under a coin program authorized by the Liberty Coin Act, 1985, was issued in 1986. Ever since the earliest Gold Eagle launched, it became a desirable item amongst both collectors and investors. In fact, it has since become a name synonymous with quality gold and silver coins.
The United States Mint has struck American Gold Eagles at several of its facilities. These 2018 American Gold Eagles originate from the West Point Mint in New York. In addition to the 1 troy ounce of 0.9167 pure gold, the United States Government also assigns a $50 (USD) face value to every coin.
With a long history of producing quality gold and silver bullion products, the United States Mint is considered one of the premier sources of precious metals products in the world. Their products usually portray designs that appeal to Americans – highlighting USA’s rich history, culture, or even significant symbols of the great nation. Over 225 years of operation later, it remains one of the most acclaimed government mints in the world.
The obverse sides of these coins feature a design adapted from Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagle design that circulated in 1907. With the sun’s rays framing her, Lady Liberty is striding forward, holding up her famed torch and an olive branch. The image depicts the continuous path of progress that America has been on, since attaining freedom. In fact, the design features the capitol building in the background, further cementing the aforementioned message. Furthermore, 50 stars surround Lady Liberty’s portrayal, along with the word ‘Liberty’ at the top.
Miley Busiek’s brilliant portrayal of a family of bald eagles graces the reverse side of this coin. The female is seen protectively snuggling against her chicks, looking upon the male as he returns to the nest. Meticulous attention to detail brings this engraving to life, making it one of the most recognizable American designs today. The face value of the coin, and the weight of gold in the coin is imprinted at the bottom of this side. ‘E Pluribus Unum’ and ‘In God We Trust,’ the national mottos of the United States are featured on either side of the family of eagles.
American Gold Eagles, along with their silver counterparts, have been a collectible series of gold coins for a long time. Although the designs are kept unchanged every year, owning every year’s release has become the norm amongst collectors and investors.
These 2018 American Gold Eagles form an integral part of the American Gold Eagle Coin program. Hence, owning every release is paramount to maintaining a complete Gold Eagle collection. Moreover, due to their popularity and fame, Gold Eagles have historically witnessed easy liquidation – should the need ever arise.
