2017-W PCGS PR-70 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin
The American Eagles Program released its first bullion coins in 1986. They were two one-ounce coins: Gold Eagles and Silver Eagles.
Silver Eagles are made of 99.9% fine silver and imprinted with emblematic designs representing American core values. Proof Silver Eagles share the same precious metal content, but the coins are beautifully enhanced by a proof finish that highlights every design detail.
These Proof Silver Eagles, in particular, were issued in West Point and bear the "W" mint mark on the reverse.
Today, SD Bullion is offering 2017-W 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coins, sealed and graded as PR-70 by PCGS.
Coin Highlights
- Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as a PR-70 by PCGS;
- Contains 1 oz of .999 fine silver;
- Proof coin;
- Produced by the US Mint;
- Issued in West Point and carries the “W” mint mark;
- Holds a USD 1 face value and legal tender status;
- The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty;
- The reverse displays John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle;
- IRA eligible.
The Design
The Walking Liberty design received this moniker because Lady Liberty, with the American flag draped on her shoulder, walks toward the sun's rays. She welcomes new immigrants looking for shelter in the New World and carries oak and laurel branches, symbols of abundance and wealth, in her hands.
The image is supplemented by the engravings “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.
The Heraldic Eagle carries the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. Thirteen pointed stars above the Eagle represent the original colonies.
The “W” mint mark from West Point and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” describing face value, weight, metal content, and purity, accompany the Eagle design.
Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.
A PCGS PR-70 Coin
PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, operates independently of sovereign mints, evaluating and grading coins according to the Sheldon Scale, from 1 to 70.
PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
