2017 NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin - Edmund C. Moy Label

The US Mint first issued American Gold Eagles in 1986, in the premiere of the American Eagle Program.

Gold Eagles became some of the most sought-after gold bullion coins globally, comprising 22k gold coins in various sizes and finishes.

These coins, in particular, are 1 oz Gold Eagles purchased from the US Mint on day #1 of their official release. NGC graded them as MS-70 coins and sealed them with its exclusive Edmund C. Moy Label.

Edmund C. Moy served as the 38th Director of the US Mint from 2006 to 2011, earning recognition as the Father of the Modern Coin Era for his transformative impact on US Mint coinage. Under his visionary leadership, Moy introduced innovative designs and oversaw the creation of iconic series such as the 24k Gold Buffalo and the revered 2009 Ultra High Relief coin. Additionally, his initiatives resulted in unprecedented minting of gold and silver coins, sparking widespread global interest in modern U.S. Coins.

At SD Bullion, you can find 2017 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coins graded as MS-70 coins and sealed in NGC Exclusive Edmund C. Moy Label.

  • Purchased from the US Mint on day #1 of their official release;
  • Contains 1 oz of actual gold content;
  • With anti-counterfeiting reeded edges;
  • Bears legal tender status and a USD 50 denomination;
  • Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty features the obverse;
  • Miley Busiek’s Bald Eagles stamp the reverse design.

The Design

The obverse represents the nation's journey toward progress, peace, and enlightenment through Lady Liberty’s march forward with a torch and an olive branch.

The word "LIBERTY" inscribed above, the Capitol Building, and the year of the coin’s mintage complete the image.

The reverse features a female eagle protecting her hatchling beneath her wing while the male eagle watches over their nest.

It also bears the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with the coin’s weight, metal content, and face value, which reads “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS.”

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue coin

NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company works independently from sovereign mints and appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

MS or Mint State describes a coin with the same format as a business circulation one that remained uncirculated. 70 is the grade given to coins with no visible flaws.

For NGC, a First Day of Issue coin corresponds to a coin purchased from its original mint on the very first day of its official release and taken to NGC’s appraisal.
