The Ellis Island Silver Coin is the fourth strike of the 2017 edition and the 39th in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

Ellis Island, also known as the Island of Hope, was historically the first destination for immigrants seeking new opportunities and experiences in the United States. In 1965, a Presidential proclamation incorporated it into the Statue of Liberty National Monument, and it is managed by the National Park Service. Following a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1998, the island, which is entirely federal property, falls under the territorial jurisdiction of either New York or New Jersey, depending on your location on the island.

The Design

The obverse features George Washington's effigy, designed by John Flanagan in 1932. It is an inspired version of the former President’s official portrayal illustrated by William Cousins in 1786.

The reverse features an immigrant family arriving at Ellis Island, embodying a blend of hope and uncertainty. In the background, the hospital building is visible. Inscriptions on this side are “ELLIS ISLAND,” “NEW JERSEY,” “2017,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
