2017 San Francisco Mint US Silver Eagle Sealed Monster Box
SD Bullion has been able to obtain a very limited supply of Mint Sealed 2017 Silver Eagle Coin Monster Boxes identified by serial number as being struck at the San Francisco Mint.
Thanks to Freedom of Information Act Lawsuits filed by Numismatic Guarantee Corp. (NGC) and CoinWorld, the US Mint has revealed production of 3,000,000 2017 Silver Eagle coins struck at the San Francisco Mint!
The US Mint's response to the FOIA revealed the Mint has been producing Silver Eagle coins at the San Francisco Mint in generic white US Mint Strapping, identifying the coins struck at the San Francisco Mint with a 6 digit serial number beginning with 4.
The Mint revealed 2017 US Silver Eagle Monster Boxes struck at the West Point Mint are marked with a 6 digit serial number beginning with a 1, 2, or 3, and sealed Monster Boxes of Silver Eagle Coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint are marked with a 6 digit serial number beginning with 5.
As noted by Coin World, Until fairly recently, the U.S. Mint used either bands color-coded for each facility or, for coins from the West Point Mint, bands bearing the facility’s name. During the last 12 months, the U.S. Mint switched to using generic US Mint straps to secure the lids on the 500-coin boxes without differentiating the origin of the coins, other than by the serial number system.
Coins struck at the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints were shipped in the generic strapped boxes to West Point and mixed in with boxes of West Point-struck coins for eventual pick-up by authorized purchasers.
SD Bullion has been able to obtain a very limited supply of Mint Sealed 2017 Silver Eagle Coin Monster Boxes identified by serial number as being struck at the San Francisco Mint.
Historically Silver Eagle coins struck at the San Francisco Mint have commanded significantly higher premiums than coins struck at the West Point Mint due to the SF Mint's reputation for striking the highest quality US Mint coins and typically grading out higher at NGC and PCGS.
We suspect collectors and numismatists alike will be thrilled with the opportunity to once again acquire a piece of history with these 2017 Silver Eagle coins struck at the San Francisco Mint.
(Note, the US Mint does NOT include mint mark on Silver Eagle Bullion Coins, so the ONLY way to identify which Mint struck the Silver Eagle Coins is by the identifying 6 digit serial number on the strapped and sealed Monster Box.)
