The Design

The obverse of the Gold Buffalo Coin is a refined version of the Indian Head Nickel, first issued in 1913 and designed by James Earle Fraser. 

It features a right-profile portrait of a Native American, crafted by combining features from various tribes, including the Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The outer rim is inscribed with “LIBERTY” near the Native American’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F” for the artist’s initials in the lower left corner.

On the reverse, the coin showcases a grand American Bison in a standing pose, which inspired the coin’s name. 

The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” curve above the bison, while “IN GOD WE TRUST” is positioned near the animal’s muzzle. Below the bison are details about the coin’s weight, metal content, fineness, and face value, which read: “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”
