2013-W PCGS PR-70 First Strike 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Reverse-Proof Coin
The United States Mint launched the American Gold Buffalo coin in 2006 as its first bullion coin made from 24-karat gold, containing 1 troy oz of gold.
Its design honors the nation’s history and Native American heritage, drawing inspiration from James Earle Fraser’s classic 1913 Indian Head Nickel.
These coins, in particular, are reverse-proof versions issued by the US Mint in the West Point branch and carry the “W” mint mark. They were purchased within 30 days of their official release and submitted to PCGS forgrading .
Today, SD Bullion offers 2013-W 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Reverse-Proof Coins graded by PCGS as PR-70 First Strike samples.

The Design
The reverse displays an American Bison in an upright, left-facing profile. The bison is surrounded by key inscriptions: across the top are the phrases “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Near the bison’s muzzle appears “IN GOD WE TRUST,” while beneath the image, the inscriptions “$50” and “1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD” denote the coin’s face value, weight, purity, and gold content.
The obverse portrays the right-profile bust of a Native American Chief, a modern interpretation of James Earle Fraser’s original design for the 1913 Indian Head Nickel.
The portrayal combines traits of three real-life tribal leaders: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved in front of the forehead, while the date of mintage and the initial “F,” Fraser’s signature, appear in the lower left.
A PCGS PR-70 “First Strike” Coin
PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.
PCGS calls “First Strike” the coins purchased from their original mint within 30 days of the official release, and submitted to PCGS appraisal.
PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. Because it is a reverse-proof coin, the background surfaces are matte, in contrast to the brilliant images engraved on it. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
