The Design
The obverse design features Lady Liberty walking toward the sun's rays with the American flag draped on her shoulder. As she walks, she carries oak branches on her left arm and welcomes those who look for a home on American soil.
The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” aside, and the year of mintage is at the bottom.
The reverse depicts John Mercanti’s Heraldic eagle with spread wings around a star-spangled shield, carrying the “E PLURIBUS UNUM” banner, arrows and oak branches. The thirteen stars above the eagle represent the original colonies.
The West Point mint mark is on the reverse side, near the olive branch carried by the eagle.
The image is surrounded by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
An NGC PF-70 and SP-70 “First Releases” Coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company works apart from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70 depending on their condition.
NGC considers “First Releases” a coin purchased from its original mint within 30 days of its public release and submitted to its appraisal.
PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. Because it is a reverse-proof coin, the background surfaces are frosted, contrasting with the brilliant images engraved. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
The Enhanced Uncirculated version, though not as reflective as a proof coin, as a brighter look than regular bullion coins and more visible design elements. They under go a special polishing process called “burnishing,” which cleans the blanks from unwanted oxides formed during the annealing and rimming processes.
SP-70 stands for Specimen-70, which describes a hybrid between Mint State and Proof with absolutely no imperfections.
