As the 38th Director of the US Mint from 2006 to 2011, Moy earned recognition as the Father of the Modern Coin Era, significantly shaping the Mint's course. Through his visionary leadership, Moy revitalized the Mint by introducing innovative designs and overseeing the creation of iconic series like the 24k Gold Buffalo and the revered 2009 Ultra High Relief coin, marking a transformative phase in numismatic history. Furthermore, his efforts led to unprecedented production levels of gold and silver coins, igniting widespread global interest in modern U.S. Coins.

The Design
The obverse of Silver Eagles reproduces the 1917 Half-Dollar Coin, designed by Adolph A. Weinman.
Lady Liberty strides toward the sun's rays with the American flag draped on her shoulder, welcoming new immigrants with oak and laurel branches that she carries. It also features the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.
John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, designed the Heraldic Eagle. In the image, the eagle has the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. Thirteen pointed stars above the Eagle represent the original colonies.
The design also contains the “W” mint mark from the West Point branch on the lower left, and the inscriptions describing the face value, weight, metal content, and purity encircle the image. They read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.
An NGC PF-70 Coin
NGC, or Numismatic Guaranty Company, operates like other third-party entities in appraising and grading coins. They utilize the Sheldon Scale, a grading system from 1 to 70, to evaluate coins based on their condition.
PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
