2012 PCGS MS-70 First Strikes 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coin

The American Gold Eagle Series comprises alluring gold coins that capture the essence of American heritage and exceptional craftsmanship. All Gold Eagles coins are crafted from 22-karat gold and showcase Augustus Saint-Gaudens' famous design of Lady Liberty in a radiant pose. 

This Gold Eagle, in particular, is a half-ounce sample purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of the official release. It was sealed and certified by PCGS as an MS-70 coin.

The Design

The reverse features Busiek’s Bald Eagle family, with the female eagle protecting her hatchling under her wing while the male keeps watch over the nest.

Weight, metal content, and face value are inscribed as “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS.” The design also has the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” 

Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty strides forward, holding a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing the nation's commitment to peace and enlightenment. The design is completed with the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s year of mintage.

PCGS, or Professional Coin Grading Service, is a renowned third-party grading service independently of sovereign mints appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

MS or Mint State describes a coin with the same format as an uncirculated business circulation sample. 70 is the grade given to coins with no visible flaws.

PCGS calls “First Strikes” the coins purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of the official release and submitted to its appreciation.
