2012 NGC SP-70 Early Releases 5 oz America The Beautiful Denali Burnished Silver Coin
The America The Beautiful Quarter Program features the annual release of five quarter-dollar coins, each struck in 5 troy oz of .999 fine silver and showcasing some of the nation’s most iconic natural landmarks.
The Denali Silver Coin is one of the five 2012 ATBs in the overall series.
Denali National Park and Preserve was originally established as Mount McKinley National Park in 1917. It was later renamed in 1980, when additional protected lands were incorporated. Known for its dynamic, glacial landscapes, the park supports a wide range of wildlife, including grizzly bears, caribou, wolves, Dall sheep, and moose. Archaeological findings dating back more than 12,000 years indicate that Alaska’s early inhabitants traveled through this region seasonally, likely for hunting, fishing, and gathering resources.
These coins, in particular, are burnished coins submitted to an NGC appraisal.
Today, SD Bullion offers 2012 5 oz America The Beautiful Denali Burnished Silver Coins, graded as NGC SP-70 Early Releases.

The Design
The obverse features a depiction of George Washington, illustrated by John Flanagan in 1932. It was inspired by the former President’s official portrait, designed by William Cousins in 1786.
The inscriptions accompanying the effigy read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”
The reverse features a Dall sheep against the backdrop of Mount McKinley. Inscriptions on this side read “DENALI,” “ALASKA,” “2012,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Burnished Coins
A Burnished Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned of all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin finish and a smooth surface, but with a less reflective luster than the Proof version.
An NGC SP-70 Early Releases Coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) is globally renowned for appraising and certifying coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks them from 1 to 70.
SP-70 stands for Specimen, describing a coin that is not a proof coin but is also not a standard circulation coin. Grade 70 is assigned to perfect coins that show no flaws.
According to NGC, “Early Releases” refers to coins purchased from their original mints within 30 days of their official release and submitted to its appraisal.
