2011 NGC MS-69 Early Releases 5 oz America The Beautiful Glacier Silver Coin

The Glacier National Park was the theme for the second edition of the America The Beautiful Quarter Program.

The US Mint produced silver coins for this series from 2010 to 2011. Fifty-six coins weighing 5 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver were issued during that period, each depicting America’s most significant sites in alluring reverse designs.

The Glacier Silver Coin was the second coin released in 2011 and the 7th in the series.

Glacier National Park, located in Montana, is named for its prominent glacier-carved terrain and remnants of glaciers from the ice age 10,000 years ago. The park's spectacular scenery was shaped by glacial forces, ancient seas, geologic faults, and uplifting. Known to the Blackfeet as the "Backbone of the World," Glacier National Park preserves over one million acres of forests, alpine meadows, lakes, rugged peaks, and glacially carved valleys in the Northern Rocky Mountains.

Today, 2011 5 oz America The Beautiful Glacier Silver Coins, purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of their official release, sealed and certified by NGC as MS-69 Early Releases coins, are available at SD Bullion.

The Design

The obverse features an effigy of George Washington, illustrated by John Flanagan in 1932 and inspired by the former President’s official portrayal designed by William Cousins in 1786.

The inscriptions accompanying the effigy are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”

The reverse showcases a classic view of Mount Reynolds' northeast slope towering in the background while a mountain goat climbs over the rocky slopes of the park's high country.

The inscriptions on this side are “GLACIER,” “MONTANA,” “2011,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

An NGC MS-69 “Early Releases” Coin

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is renowned worldwide for evaluating and grading coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which rates coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition.

For NGC, “Early Releases” refer to coins purchased from the original mint within the first 30 days of their official release and taken to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State. Mint State coins are shaped as business coins. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
