2010 NGC SP-70 5 oz America The Beautiful Mount Hood Burnished Silver Coin
The America the Beautiful Quarter Program features a series of 56 silver coins, each struck in 5 troy oz, highlighting some of the most celebrated destinations across the United States.
These sites are recognized for their outstanding natural landscapes or historical importance and are preserved as national treasures.
The fifth release in the series, issued in 2010, pays tribute to Mount Hood.
Situated in Oregon, the Mount Hood National Forest was established as a protected area in 1893. Spanning more than 60 miles, from the Columbia River Gorge to the Olallie Scenic Area, the forest is home to notable landmarks, including the historic Timberline Lodge and the scenic Clackamas River.
These coins, in particular, are burnished coins submitted to NGC appraisal.

The reverse side features a scenic depiction of Mount Hood with Lost Lake in the foreground. This side is inscribed with “MOUNT HOOD,” “OREGON,” “2010,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Burnished Coins
A Burnished Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned of all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin finish and a smooth surface, but with a less reflective luster than the Proof version.
An NGC SP-70 Coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) is globally renowned for appraising and certifying coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks them from 1 to 70.
SP-70 stands for Specimen, describing a coin that is not a proof coin but is superior to a standard circulation coin. Grade 70 is assigned to perfect coins that show no flaws.
