The Design

The obverse, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, portrays Lady Liberty striding forward, holding a torch and an olive branch, representing progress, enlightenment, and peace.

It is also engraved with the word “LIBERTY,” the year of issuance, and the US Capitol Building.

The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, features a family of Bald Eagles. The female eagle protects her hatchling under her wing while the male eagle watches over the nest.

The design also features the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The coin's weight, metal content, and face value are inscribed “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS.”

An NGC MS-69 Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins based on their condition, from 70 to 1.

MS stands for Mint State and describes a widespread circulation coin that has never been in circulation. Grade 69 is attributed to a coin whose original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
