1998 NGC MS-69 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coin

The American Gold Eagle is the official gold coin in the US. It is a 22k gold coin imprinted with the most emblematic American symbols: Lady Liberty and the Bald Eagle.

The one-ounce gold coin debuted the series in 1986, but the US Mint broadened the collection by including Gold Eagles of varied finishes and sizes.

The 1/2 oz Gold Eagle is the heaviest fractional option of the series.

Today, SD Bullion offers 1998 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coins sealed in NGC slabs and graded as MS-69 coins.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and certified by NGC as MS-69 coins;
  • Contains 1/2 oz of actual gold content;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Holds legal tender status and a face value of USD 25;
  • With reeded edges;
  • The obverse showcases the 1907 Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty;
  • The reverse displays Miley Busiek’s Eagles.

The Design

The obverse of Gold Eagles showcases Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin design, in which Lady Liberty marches forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch.

The march symbolizes the nation's evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the upper rim. The Capitol Building is on the lower left, and the coin’s mintage year is on the right.

Miley Busiek’s reverse design showcases a family of Bald Eagles in which the female eagle cherishes its hatchling under her wing while the male one perches their nest.

It is complemented by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the coin’s description of weight, metal content, and face value, which reads “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS.”

An NGC MS-69 Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company works independently of sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins based on the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins based on their condition, from 70 to 1.

According to the scale, MS stands for Mint State, referring to a coin made in the same format as a business circulation sample that has never been in circulation. Grade 69 is attributed to a coin whose original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
