The US Mint first released US Gold Eagles in 1986 for the premiere of the American Gold Eagle Collection. The debuting gold coin was a one-ounce Gold Eagle bullion version.

Proof Gold Eagles were included in the series a few months later.

Proof Gold Eagles are 22k gold coins imprinted with Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ and Miley Busiek’s designs, like their bullion version. However, they exhibit a mirror-like luster that enhances their appearance and highlights the most intricate design details.

The reverse depicts a family of Bald Eagles, designed by Miley Busiek. The female eagle cherishes her hatchling under her wing while the male perches on their nest. 

Weight, metal content, and face value information are described as “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS.” The engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” supplement the imagery.

An NGC PF-69 Coin 

The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company), to appraise and grade coins.

According to the scale, PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
