1989 NGC MS-69 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin

Since its premiere in 1986, American Gold Eagles have been a favorite in the bullion market, reaching the top of the list as one of the best-selling gold bullion coins worldwide.

The US Mint introduced the 1 oz Gold Eagle paired with a 1 oz Silver Eagle and has maintained their annual strikes to meet investors’ and collectors’ demands.

Graded American Gold Eagles are particularly appealing to coin enthusiasts who want to guarantee the acquisition of authentic coins of historical relevance.

Today, you can purchase the 1989 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin grade MS-69 by the NGC online from SD Bullion.

  • Contains 1 oz of 22-carat gold (.9167 fineness);
  • Evaluated, graded, and encapsulated by the NGC as an MS-69 coin;
  • Bears legal tender status and denomination of USD 50, backed by the US Government;
  • With reeded edges and historical motifs;
  • The 1907 Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty is on the obverse;
  • Original Bald Eagle reverse design.

The Design

The 1986 American Gold Eagle debuted with Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design on the obverse, the same featured in the 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin and maintained in the 1989 Gold Eagle edition.

Lady Liberty walks forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing the American evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment. The Capitol Building appears on the lower left, the coin’s mintage year is on the right, in Roman letters, and “LIBERTY” arches on top, encircled by six-pointed stars.

The Bald Eagle reverse design displays a female Bald Eagle cherishing its hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches their nest.

The image is flanked by the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the description of weight, metal content, and denomination at the bottom with the words “1 OZ. FINE GOLD - 50 DOLLARS,” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” engraved on top.

Mintage

The US Mint manufactured 415,790 American Gold Eagles in 1989, weighing 1.0909 troy ounces (or 33.931 grams) with a diameter of 1.287 inches (32.70 mm).

These coins are essentially 22-karat gold (.9167 fineness), with 3% silver and 5.33% copper in the alloy to ensure durability and robustness.

The silver and copper alloy are extra additions, guaranteeing a full one-troy-ounce pure gold content. That means this coin is slightly heavier than similar gold bullion coins in the market, such as the .9999 fine Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

An NGC MS-69 Graded Coin

The Sheldon Scale, introduced in 1949, ranks coins with a scale that ranges from 1 to 70 to evaluate coins according to their condition and authenticity. The higher the number the coin gets, the closer to perfection it is.

The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company, a renowned international and independent service, uses the Sheldon Scale to analyze the coins submitted to its assessment and grade them.

A Mint State (MS) coin describes a coin produced for regular distribution that has never circulated. The number 69 means the coin's original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
