First introduced in 1987, this series made its mark in the numismatic world by featuring captivating depictions of the British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, alongside Britannia, an iconic symbol of strength and resilience. 

The Royal Mint offers the Britannia in silver and gold, available in a range of sizes and finishes, including fractional options.

The Design

The obverse displays Raphael Maklouf’s depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. The effigy is a right-profile bust of a young Monarch wearing the stunning Diamond Diadem. The image is inscribed with the coin’s face value, “ELIZABETH II,” and the letters “DEI GRATIA REGINA. F. D,” which stands for “By the grace of God, Queen.”

The reverse depicts Britannia, the feminine national guise, on British coins since 1672. Philip Nathan created the reverse, in which Britannia faces a fierce wind, carrying the Union Jack Shield and her trident. 

The artistry includes the coin’s weight, metal content, fineness, and issuance.

Because they are proof coins, their blank fields exhibit a mirror-like luster, while the design elements are engraved with a matte finish.
