The Design
The Walking Liberty design featured on the obverse was created by Adolph A. Weinman. Lady Liberty walks toward the sun's rays, holding oak and laurel branches in one arm, and she stretches the other in a welcome sign. The American flag is draped on her shoulder.
The word “LIBERTY” arches over her, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is on the lower right, and the year of mintage is at the bottom.
The Heraldic Eagle, on the reverse, was a creation of John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. The Eagle has the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. The original colonies are represented by the thirteen stars above the Eagle’s head.
Encircling the image, read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” describing face value, weight, metal content, and purity.
Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.
A PCGS PR-69 Coin
PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, operates independently of sovereign mints, evaluating and grading coins. Utilizing the Sheldon Scale, whose grading system ranges from 1 to 70, they meticulously assess coins based on their condition.
According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
