1945-S NGC MS-66 Silver Jefferson War Nickel - Original Bag Fragment

From 1942 to 1945, the US Mint crafted Silver Jefferson War Nickel coins with an unusual metal composition to serve as the US 5-cent coin.

In a strategic metal conservation effort to reserve critical metals for the military, this coin received a special wartime alloy composed of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, a departure from the standard nickel composition. 

Those coins issued by the San Francisco Mint bear an “S” mint mark.

The reverse features Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home in Virginia. It is accompanied by the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” the “S” mintmark identifying the San Francisco Mint, “MONTICELLO,” “FIVE CENTS,” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

An NGC MS-66 Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an independent third-party service that uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to appraise and grade coins according to their condition. The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for mint state. It refers to a coin struck in the same format as a business circulation coin that remained uncirculated. Grade 66 indicates the coin may have contact marks and signs of wear and tear, but it is above average in quality of strike and preserved original mint luster.
