1908-S NGC XF-40 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coin
The US Mint produced Indian Gold Eagle Coins from 1907 to 1919 and sporadically until 1933. During this period, these coins served as the official $10 currency of the United States.
$10 Indian Eagle Gold Coins contain .48375 oz of pure gold and feature a design created by prominent sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The image depicts Lady Liberty wearing a Native American headdress, which gave the coin its nickname.
Because of the Gold Confiscation Act of 1933, many 1$10 Indian Head Eagle Coins were hoarded or melted down due to their gold content, similar to other Pre-1933 gold coins. This significantly reduced their availability in the market.
These coins, in particular, were minted at the San Francisco branch. Hence, they bear the “S” mint mark.
SD Bullion offers 1908-S $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coins today, sealed in NGC slabs and graded as XF-70 samples.

The Design
Augustus Saint-Gaudens depicted Lady Liberty on the obverse, adorned with a feathered headdress symbolizing Native American heritage, with the word "LIBERTY" inscribed. The year of minting appears below Liberty's image.
On the reverse, a Bald Eagle is perched on an arrow entwined with an olive branch. The phrases "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" flank the eagle. The country's name, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," is on top, the “S” mint mark is on the lower left, next to the "TEN DOLLARS" denomination at the bottom.
An NGC XF-40 coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) appraises and grades coins apart from sovereign mints using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks from 1 to 70, according to the coin’s condition.
According to the scale, XF stands for “extremely fine.” The designation XF-40 indicates the coin has light wear seen at the highest points of the coin, but most design details are sharp, and traces of the original mint luster may be preserved.
