The US Mint issued Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins from 1850 until 1907, serving as the official $20 coin in circulation until the introduction of the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin. 

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle is known for its high gold content, amounting to .9675 oz, and emblematic designs created by James B. Longacre.

During the economic turmoil of the 1930s, the $20 Liberty Double Eagle, like many other Pre-1933 Gold Coins, was a prime target for gold hoarders. Many were later confiscated by the Federal Government through the Executive Order 6102 in 1933. This historical event adds to the coin's significance and rarity.

The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty’s portrayal adorned with a tiara inscribed "LIBERTY." Surrounding her are thirteen six-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, with the year of issuance inscribed at the bottom rim.

The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle, encircled by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Beneath the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," the eagle was depicted with its wings spread wide, the national shield on its chest, arrows in its talons, and a banner reading "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. The denomination "TWENTY DOLLARS" is engraved at the bottom.
