The Liberty Double Eagle, a $20 gold coin, circulated in the United States from 1850 to 1907. 

The US Mint crafted these coins with 0.9675 ounces of gold and adorned them with designs of Lady Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle, created by James B. Longacre, the fourth Chief Engraver of the US Mint.

Produced at various US Mint branches, each coin issued by the San Francisco Mint features an “S” on the reverse side.

The Design

Lady Liberty’s obverse design contains a tiara inscribed "LIBERTY," with thirteen six-pointed stars representing the original Thirteen Colonies and the year of mintage.

The reverse displays the Heraldic Eagle depicted with spread wings, arrows in its talons, the national shield on its chest, and the banner "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. 

It includes the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the coin's face value of "TWENTY DOLLARS."
