The US Mint crafted Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins with legal tender status, .9675 oz of gold content, and featuring iconic national symbols designed by James B. Longacre from 1850 to 1907.

They served as the official $20 circulating coin until they were replaced by the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin. Those $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins issued by the San Francisco Mint, one of the US Mint branches, carry the “S” mint mark.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty wearing a tiara engraved with “LIBERTY.” The thirteen six-pointed stars that encircle her bust refer to the Thirteen Original Colonies. The year of mintage is inscribed at the bottom rim.

The reverse stamps the Heraldic Eagle encircled by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” followed by the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

It displays the Eagle with spread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak. 

The “S” mint mark is beneath the shield. The coin’s denomination engraved at the bottom reads “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
