1881-S NGC MS-61 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin - From Original Bag
From 1839 to 1908, the Liberty Half Eagle was the official $5 coin, produced by the US Mint for widespread circulation, containing 90% pure gold and a unique design created by Christian Gobrecht.
During the economic collapse of 1929, gold spot prices increased, and several Pre-1933 Gold Coins, like the $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins, were subject to confiscation and melting due to Executive Order 6102 in 1933.
Surprisingly, some Brilliant Uncirculated 1881 $5 Liberty Half Eagles survived the Federal Government's purge and were found stashed away in a bank vault, in their original mint bags, unopened since 1881.
Today, SD Bullion offers 1881-S $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins from Original Bag, sealed in NGC slabs and certified as MS-61 samples.

The Design
Christian Gobrecht designed the obverse side using a portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet with the word “LIBERTY” engraved on it. The coin also features thirteen stars surrounding her bust, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is at the bottom rim.
On the reverse, Gobrecht presents the Heraldic Eagle with the national shield on its chest, olive branches and arrows in its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” written on a banner, which appears above its head.
The “S” mint mark from the San Francisco Mint is beneath the Eagle.
The inscriptions encircling the image read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”, which refers to the coin’s face value.
An NGC MS-61 Coin
NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an internationally recognized service that appraises coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale to grade them from 1 to 70, according to their condition.
An MS-Mint State coin has the same format as a business coin. Grade 61 indicates that the coin’s mint luster may be diminished, with clusters of minor contact marks and noticeable hairlines.
