1861 NGC MS-61 $1 Liberty Head Gold Coin - Type III

The Liberty Head Gold Coin embodies the spirit and current craftsmanship of the 19th century.

The US Mint struck Liberty Head Gold Coins from 1849 to 1889 to serve as the official dollar coin in the US. The coin was crafted with James B. Longacre’s design and contains .0483 Troy oz of gold.

James B. Longacre’s third design for the Gold $1 is a revamped version of his Type II, known as the Indian Princess. Because of the intricate design, Type II coinage presented errors, and Longacre provided a new portrayal of Lady Liberty in Type III.

At SD Bullion, you can acquire the 1861, graded by NGC as MS-61 samples.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and certified as an MS-61 coin by NGC;
  • Contains .0483 oz of actual gold content;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Pre-1933 American gold coin;
  • The smallest gold dollar ever produced;
  • Holds a USD 1 face value and legal tender status;
  • James B. Longacre’s Indian Princess design.

The Design

The obverse showcases the Indian Princess design, which portrays Lady Liberty wearing a fanciful feathered headdress in Type II. However, to correct type II deficiencies, Longacre came up with a larger head for Liberty.

It also contains the word “LIBERTY” inscribed on the headdress, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” encircles the bust. The image is inspired by the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum at the time.

The reverse design remains the same. It features the coin’s face value and year of issuance surrounded by the “agricultural wheat,” which comprises cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.

An NGC MS-61 Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an internationally recognized service that appraises coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale to grade them from 1 to 70, according to their condition.

An MS-Mint State coin has the same format as a business coin. Grade 61 indicates that the coin’s mint luster may be diminished, with clusters of minor contact marks and noticeable hairlines.
