The Obverse Design
Silver Eagle's obverse design remains as displayed in the series’ release.
It showcases the Walking Liberty design, created by Adolph A. Weinman, imprinted in the 1917 Half Dollar coin and rescued in 1986 by the American Eagle Program.
As the moniker suggests, Lady Liberty walks toward the sun's rays. She has the American flag draped on her shoulder, oak branches on her left arm, and a stretched right arm for a welcome sign. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is aside, and the year of mintage is at the bottom.
The Original Reverse Design
The debuting reverse design is a creation of John Mercanti.
It displays the heraldic eagle with spread wings and a star-spangled shield on its chest. The eagle carries the “E Pluribus Unum” banner on its beak, arrows, and olive branches in its talons. The thirteen stars above the eagle represent the original colonies.
The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” complete the reverse design.
The New Reverse Design
The celebration of the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Program in 2021 gave the Silver Eagle coin a new reverse design.
It was designed by Emily Damstra and features a more natural Bald Eagle perching on a branch with its open wings. The engravings are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER,” referring to the coin’s face value, weight, and metal content, separated by stars and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
