The Design

The obverse design features Lady Liberty, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens to be the 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin. 

Lady Liberty is the feminine personification of the nation, and her march forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, represents the nation's march to progress, peace, and enlightenment. The Capitol Building is imprinted on the lower left. 

It also features the word “LIBERTY” engraved on top, the coin’s mintage year on the right, and stars encircling the image.

The Bald Eagle is a permanent design element in Gold Eagle Coins.

The original reverse design displays a female Bald Eagle cherishing its hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches their nest. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are inscribed over the image, which is flanked by the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The coin’s weight, metal content, and face value are at the bottom rim.

In 2021, the reverse design was updated to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Program. Emily Damstra revamped the Bald Eagle, giving it a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and a highlighted hooked beak.
