$1 Liberty Head Gold Coin Type III XF - Random Year

The Liberty Head Gold Coin, minted from 1849 to 1889, reflects the artistry and values of 19th-century America.

It was the official U.S. dollar coin from 1849 to 1854, designed by James B. Longacre and containing .0483 troy ounces of gold.

Longacre’s third design for the Gold $1, known as the Indian Princess, was an improvement over his Type II design, which faced issues due to its intricate details. In response, Longacre introduced a new, more polished portrayal of Lady Liberty in the Type III version to correct these errors.

SD Bullion offers $1 Liberty Head Gold Coins of Type III in Extremely Fine condition and varied mintages, randomly taken from our inventory.

  • The design was created by James B. Longacre;

The Design

The Indian Princess design features the obverse. It depicts Lady Liberty wearing a fanciful feathered headdress, but Longacre created a larger head for Liberty to correct type II deficiencies.

The headdress is inscribed with the word “LIBERTY,” while “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” encircles Liberty’s effigy. The image is inspired by the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum at the time.

The reverse design remained untouched. It features the coin’s face value and year of issuance surrounded by the “agricultural wheat,” which comprises cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.
