The Obverse Design
On the obverse, Lady Liberty marches forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. The march symbolizes the nation's evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment.
The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the upper rim. The Capitol Building is on the lower left, and the coin’s mintage year is on the right.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the design for the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin from 1907 to 1933.
Reverse Design Type 1
Type 1 refers to Miley Busiek's reverse design. It portrays a family of Bald Eagles, with a female eagle cherishing its hatchling under her wing while the male perches on their nest.
The engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the coin’s description of weight, metal content, and face value reading “1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD—5 DOLLARS” complete the image.
Reverse Design Type 2
Type 2 corresponds to the design update of 2021, which celebrates the 35th anniversary of the American Eagles Program.
The artwork, designed by Jennie Norris, depicts the majestic bald eagle in a close-up with a deep gaze and a highlighted hooked beak.
An NGC PF-70 coin
NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company works independently of sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.
PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
